about

1984, my friend Dave Seabright bought the ‘Marnie’ 7” and I bought the 12”. ‘Butch’ became my first musician ‘mate’. I don’t mean we used to hang out and drink together but for a while we corresponded regularly: letters and postcards, long phone calls and we’d swap tapes and suggest bands that each other should listen to.

When Dave Driscoll and I decided to put the ‘Abigail’s Birthday Party’ tape together, we approached a number of bands asking for contributions. There were a lot of no replies and a lot of “nothing to spare” messages which put a huge dent in our confidence. Then we received a tape from Pat with about half a dozen songs to choose from! That’s how we ended up with ‘Olof Palme’, an exclusive at that time!

We didn’t/couldn’t keep up that level of communication but it was still great to see Pat at gigs now and again and of course, I always had the new albums to listen to!

When I heard he was sick and needed money, like so many other people, I sent in some cash. The amount raised was a huge testimony to how much affection we had for Pat … “though we’re just passing by we touch so many people’s lives”.

The last time I saw Pat was at the Lexington, playing with the Woodentops. I hadn’t seen him for a couple of years but he saw me from the stage, grinned and said, “Hello Tony” as if it had only been a few days!

So, I wrote a song, a short song, a bit like one of my favourite Butcher tunes, ‘Forever’. “It sounds like it should be the last track on an album” I said to Pat when I first heard it … “all my songs sound like they should be the last track on the album” he replied :-)

It also features the guitar playing of Ali Jackson. Now based in Australia, Ali was one half of A Riot of Colour. While AROC were recording an EP in Alaska Studios, Pat was in another room recording the ‘Fishcotheque’ album. Pat borrowed their 12 string for ‘Lot 49’ and they got a mention on the sleeve!

Dave Seabright plays the bass … I must ask him if he still has that ‘Marnie’ 7”

Cheers Pat x

lyrics

WELL I JUST SAT DOWN TO WRITE ME A SONG
IT WAS MEANT TO BE LOUD ANGRY AND LONG
BUT IT'S NONE OF THESE THINGS
THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON

NOW LIFE IS SHORT AND TIMES PASSES ON
SO I PROMISE I WON'T KEEP YOU TOO LONG
I'M A SIMPLE SOUL AND IT'S A SIMPLE SONG

SOME PEOPLE LONG FOR A HIGHWAY TO HELL
BUT I FIND GROOVING ALONG IN THE BUS LANE IS SWELL

SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE A TALE TO TELL
STERLING NANCY THE SIKKORSKIS AS WELL
AND THOUGH WE'RE JUST PASSING BY
WE TOUCH SO MANY PEOPLE'S LIVES

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TALK TO TONIGHT
CALL ON PETER LORRE COS HE'S ALRIGHT

AND IF YOU WAKE UP BLUE AND DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START
REMEMBER KITTENS MEND A BROKEN HEART
AND I THINK IT'S CLEAR THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON
GOING ON
SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON

I BET YOU WANNA HEAR...
